“Let’s build a more affordable, safer and healthier community.”

About Manny

Manny De Los Santos is a proud lifelong resident of Washington Heights, raising his own family in the same apartment building he grew up in.

From an early age he learned the value of hard work from the example his parents set on the factory floor and as a NYC street vendor. He’s now setting the same example for his own children through his devoted work as a community activist.

Manny is the first person in his immediate family to attend college, earning a Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology and a Master's Degree in Social Work from (SUNY) University at Albany. Manny was a student athlete on the University at Albany’s track and field team and a member of Phi Iota Alpha Fraternity, Inc.

After university, Manny embarked on a 13-year career as a Social Worker and Community School Director in schools across New York City where he helped students overcome academic challenges, homelessness, and substance abuse. He worked tirelessly to advocate for and secure vital resources for our neediest families and student across the city.

In his evenings and free time Manny has been actively involved in several community organizations including as Co- Chair for the Northern Manhattan Young Democrats, as a member of the Neighborhood Advisory Board (NAB) and a member of Community Board 12.

Manny successfully ran and was elected as a Democratic District Leader in 2009 for the 72nd Assembly District. Manny was later also elected as a State Committeeperson in 2016.  As a District Leader, Manny has prioritized voter engagement and education as tools to empower the lives of residents in Northern Manhattan. He has coordinated voter registration and census drives, facilitated tenant, housing, and immigration forums as well as organized annual turkey giveaways, coat drives, toy drives and backpack giveaways in conjunction with tenant associations and dozens of minority owned small businesses.

Community Priorities

As your Assemblyman, I will fight for:

Housing Affordability and Stability

The people of this community are slowly being forced out by ever increasing rents. Our community must have affordable, safe and secure housing.  We must work to stop the flow of families being priced out of our neighborhoods and to protect renters from predatory property owners attempting to push them out of their homes.

Recovery Resources for Small Businesses

The small businesses of Inwood and Washington Heights are the engine of this community. The losses they have suffered during the pandemic have been devastating. If elected, I will immediately support the 1 billion dollars in small business aid proposed by Governor Hochul in the 2022 budget.

Equitable Access to COVID-19 Aid

Communities of color have been disproportionately burdened with the worst effects of the pandemic. We must ensure that efforts to provide aid and help to those effected by Covid is distributed equitably to all New Yorkers by removing any language, technology and economic hurdles preventing people from receiving the aid they need.

High Quality and Well-Funded Schools for Our Children

All of our children deserve high quality, well-funded schools with the technological tools available to prepare students for 21st century careers. Our schools must be racially and economically desegregated in order to give every student their best chance to succeed.

Resources To Improve Public Safety

The rise in violent crime in our community has been unsettling and threatens to undo the progress we have seen in our neighborhoods over the last three decades. Most disturbingly, it has been communities of color who suffered the brunt of this increase. When our neighbors feel unsafe in their homes, in the neighborhood or on the subway, we cannot thrive. When our neighbors do not trust the police to serve our communities with dignity and respect, we also cannot thrive.  For our community to thrive, we need the NYPD. But we also need the NYPD to do better.
